I recently had an occasion to visit one of the PreK classrooms. I was surprised to see that the whole room of children was sitting quietly and doing a morning meditation. It was quite impressive to watch a group of energetic and interactive preschoolers sitting still, with their eyes closed. They were listening to the quiet voice of suggestions to focus on their breathing and imagining a pleasant place to calm their energy and relax for a few minutes. The resource that the teachers were using is online at Peace Out – Cosmic Kids
As adults, we can forget that children are quite capable of relaxing into an intentional calm mindset with suggested guidance. It could even be a brief family activity at whatever time of day fits your family’s schedule and energy levels, including bedtime. Along with calming everyone’s energy, it could be an opportunity for conversation. After imagining a pleasant, calming place, you could ask your child or children about their experience and learn a little bit about how they imagine the world. It could also be an opportunity for your child to see you calming your busy parent energies and be reminded of the value of mental relaxation. In our busy, hectic schedules, a little relaxation can always be helpful.
